Woman burns herself and two children to death over a cheating husband

Sombre mood gripped residents of Lugari station B Village of Kakamega County, after a 35 year old woman burnt herself and two children to death Sunday night.

Helen Vuyanzi is alledged to have smeared parts of the house with petrol, locked up herself with three sons inside their house before lighting it up.

According to Mr. Stephen Okila a family member, he was called by his cousin Thomas Amito who is the husband to the deceased informing him that his house was on fire.

“I rushed to his house, and confirmed that it was true that it was on fire. Unfortunately, my cousin’s wife and her two sons aged four and one year respectively had already been burnt beyond recognition. The couple’s eldest child, a boy aged 10 managed to escape through the window,” said Okila.

Okila said he was not aware of any conflict between his cousin, Amito, and his wife.

However, speaking on condition of anonymity a close neighbor to the family said that the deceased and her partner had been having recurrent domestic wrangles.

“The two were in regular feud, with the woman accusing her husband of infidelity. We didn’t expect that their issues would end in a tragedy,” said the neighbor.

Confirming the incident, Lugari Sub-County Police Commander, Bernard Ngungu said Vuyanzi had accused her husband of infidelity.

“We had earlier Saturday counseled Vuyanzi and her spouse,Thomas Amito, after a domestic dispute between them. The deceased had accused Thomas of cheating on her with another woman,” said Ngungu.

Police say the mother-of-three might have bought petrol from a local filling station, and used it to set her matrimonial home a blaze.

Bodies of Vuyanzi and her two sons were moved to Webuye sub county hospital mortuary.
