An officer in Garissa county reportedly stabbed his girlfriend to death and blew himself up.

According to an eyewitness account, the officer attached to Masalani police station and the girlfriend were involved in an intense argument before he stabbed her.

After realizing the lady had bled from the physical injuries to death, the police officer resorted to taking his life by detonating a hand grenade, thereby blowing himself up.

“It’s likely that the officer, out of depression or regret of killing the lady, had to commit suicide to avert the consequences of the act,” said Ijara sub-county police commander William Oyugi.

Mr. oyugi added that the couple had been having a rough relationship as the girlfriend had earlier fled with their kid accusing the cop of infidelity.

“The officer had burns all over his body caused by shrapnel from the explosive”

The bodies of the two deceased were taken to the Mwingi mortuary awaiting a postmortem examination.

Cases of gender-based violence have been on the rise recently.

Agnes Tirop, also a victim of gender-based violence, was laid to rest in her home village in Nandi county. She was a top rising star in the Kenyan athletics scene before she met her untimely death.

She was found dead in her home at Iten from a stab wound.
