Jubilee party secretary general Raphael Tuju on Wednesday of 17th November 2021 told the star that they have done wide consultation and the new deputy governor will be announced soon. This comes a day after the swearing in of Anne Kananu on Tuesday of 16th November 2021.
Kananu promised to work closely with Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga. Tuju said, “As Jubilee Party, we did wide consultations and a decision on the nominee was arrived at.
These kinds of issues need wide consultations.” Tuju further declined to give the name saying that it would be known publicly soon.
The seat of deputy governor in Nairobi was left vacant after the swearing in of Anne kananu as the governor. Kananu has been the deputy governor until she was sworn in as the third governor of Nairobi.
Kananu becomes the third governor of Nairobi and the forth woman governor. Other women governors include; Anne Waiguru of kirinyaga, Charity Ngilu of Kitui and the late Gladys Laboso of Bomet.
According to Supreme Court advisory of March 2018, the governor is supposed to fill the vacancy of deputy governor within 14days. The nominee will be expected to be sworn in in 60days after being approved by county assembly.
According to lawyer and political analyst Danstan Omari, the person to deputise Governor Kananu will most likely be one favored by President Uhuru Kenyatta and Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
He said, “The Deputy Governor will be a product of the handshake which is expected and in this case, it will be only one nominee.”
After kananu has identified the nominee, she will write a letter to speaker of county assembly notifying on the decision. The name would be tabled in the assembly and then handled by an appointed committee that would be led by speaker and the majority leader as vice chair.
After the committee is done the clerk of county assembly would communicate the dates and time of vetting. After vetting the committee would table its report that will either be approved or rejected by members of county assembly.
