Politicians in Kisii have been warned against transferring voters to their preferred regions so as to boost their support in next year’s General Election.
According to Nyaribari Masaba Constituency hopeful Daniel Manduku Nyagwoka (ODM), politicians have started buying voters from other regions which he said they will not accept.
He said the voters being ferried have their own regions where they can be registered to vote and promote development there What worries us more is even if you try to ask such leaders why they are doing that they don’t have a genuine reason as to why they are doing that,” he said.
Manduku spoke on Saturday during a press briefing in Kisii.
He was referring to an incident that happened in Kiamokama area, Nyaribari masaba last week where angry residents almost torched two matatus that were allegedly ferrying voters from the neighbouring Nyamira County to come and register as voters in Kiamokama area.
The ferrying of voters according to Manduku is being done by incumbent leaders who are fearing defeat.
“It is shameful that some people have done nothing since they were elected to office and now, they want to be reelected to office massively by ‘buying’ voters from other regions. They should be informed that we are watching and such cannot happen under our watch,” he noted.
Under the electoral laws, it is not illegal for a voter to seek transfer on where they want to vote as long as they register themselves in advance.
The electoral commission is undertaking a mass voter registration exercise targeting at least six million new voters which is to be concluded this week. What worries us more even if you try to ask such leaders why they are doing that they don’t have a genuine reason as to why they are doing that,” he said.
