Deputy President William Ruto’s rally in Kondele, Kisumu, was disrupted after rowdy youth stoned his campaign motorcade. The DP tried his best to calm down the crowd amidst the chaos but it was all in vain, forcing the police assigned to maintain law and order at the rally to lob teargas to disperse the crowd. He was heard saying:
“Kisumu hii ni Kenya.Na Kisumu hii tutahakikisha tumekomboa Kisumu kutoka mambo ya mawe.”
“We must get rid of the leaders who hire young people to throw stones,” he added.
While condemning the incident in a series of tweets, the DP urged his competitors to shun away from hiring the youth to throw stones. The tweet read:
“Our plans and programmes will ensure that the youth are liberated from regressive stone-throwing culture by engaging them in gainful activities that will better their lives through the Bottom –up economic model.”
There were no casualties reported during the incident but photos of damaged campaign vehicles that went viral shortly after, show the impact of the unfortunate incident.
Wednesday, was day two of three of the DP’s campaigns in the Lake side city of Kisumu. On Tuesday, he had a successful engagement with the youth at the Suzanna Owiyo Arts Centre.
